When 12 slaves were bought, often one got thrown in free. This became known as the "Dirty Dozen."
It has grown into a very insulting, vulgar, and sometimes fatal game.

The insults Muhammad Ali heaped on Joe Frazier for their third and final fight are a good example,

De Ford Bailey was born Dec 14th 1899 in Smith County Tennessee.

like way too many amazing performers of the 1920's, he only recorded a hand full of sides
back in the day. this one is one of my favorites from him.

Davidson County Blues DeFord Bailey (December 14, 1899 July 2, 1982) was an early country music star
and the first African American performer on the Grand Ole Opry. Bailey played
several instruments but is best known for his harmonica tunes. He was one of the
few notable African-American stars in country music.
Dixie Flyer Blues New York, NY Tuesday, April 19, 1927 Deford Baily

DeFord Bailey (December 14, 1899 - July 2, 1982) was a harmonica virtuoso, a blues singer,
a guitarist, a banjoist, a composer and a founding member of the WSM Grand Ole Opry.

Bailey performed on WDAD, the first significant Nashville radio station, in 1925. Soon afterwards
Dr. Humphrey Bate took him to play his harmonica on the new and much more powerful WSM station.
At his first appearance on the "Barn Dance" DeFord immediately impressed the announcer, "the Solemn
Old Judge" George Hay, who threw his steamboat whistle high in the air and declared that he was
henceforth going to be a regular part of the show.

According to Judge Hay, DeFord was both the inspiration for the naming of the Opry, and the very
first performer to play on the newly named show. This occurred in 1927 following a network program
with a classical rendition of a locomotive by composer Dr. Walter Damrosch. After hearing the classical
version of the train, Hay opened the program by telling the audience that they had been listening to
"Grand Opera," but would now hear "Grand Ole Opry" and introduced DeFord Bailey to play his
harmonica version of the Pan American train.

- DeFord Bailey Memorial Newscast -

June 23rd 1983 newscast from Nashville features Bill Monroe and Roy Acuff unveiling DeFord Bailey's
memoridal. Monroe and Acuff talk about Bailey and how "The Harmonica Wizard" should be included in
the Country Music Hall of Fame ... which finally came true in 2005. Great film clips of Bailey playing.
Video supplied by David Morton, Bailey's biographer, from his origional video tapes of the newscast

Burl C. "Jaybird" Coleman (May 20, 1896 January 28, 1950) was an American country blues harmonica player, guitarist and singer.
Born in Gainesville, Alabama, the son of sharecroppers and one of four children. He was born, raised and worked on a farm, and picked
up and learned the harmonica at 12 years of age. Coleman began performing the blues as an entertainer for American soldiers while
serving in the United States Army. It was during this period that he was given the nickname "Jaybird" due to his independent manner.
In the early 1920s, he teamed with fellow bluesman Big Joe Williams as a performer in the Birmingham Jug Band which toured
through the American South.

Willie James Dixon was a bright, self-confident, determined, intelligent, and gifted man
who helped the blues evolve from the 1940's through the 1980's. Born the seventh of 14
children on July 1, 1915, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Dixon was greatly influenced by his
mother, Daisy, who turned everything she said into rhymes, and Willie learned to do the
same. His first real musical influence came at the age of seven when he often left
school to follow a truck pulling a band behind it starring pianist Little Brother Montgomery.

At the age of seventeen, Dixon left his hometown of Vicksburg for the busy streets of
Chicago to become a boxer. One year later he was named the Illinois State Golden Gloves
Heavyweight Champion. He only fought four fights during his pro career because of a
money dispute with his manager.

He began his musical career by forming the Five Breezes in 1940 with
Leonard "Baby Doo" Caston. They recorded songs until 1941 when Willie was arrested
for refusing to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. After finishing his sentence,
Dixon formed a new group, the Four Jumps of Jive.

In 1945 'Baby Doo' and Willie teamed up to form the Big Three Trio along with
guitarist Benardo Dennis. The Big Three played for mainly white audiences, but they would
also join Muddy Waters in late night jam sessions, The Big Three landed a recording contract
first with Bullet Records and then in 1947 with Columbia Records". While playing with the
Big Three Trio, Dixon met Phil and Leonard Chess. They hired Dixon.

Dixon was able to read, write, compose, and arrange music, which made him the mainstay of
Chess Records Dixon was also considered the backbone of the Chess operation. He stayed
with them until 1957.

Dixon's songs are considered to be the greatest body of work of any blues songwriter.
They were recorded by such musicians as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elvis Presley,
the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and the Doors  Dixon died at the age of seventy-six
at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank, California on January 29, 1992.

Willie Dixon is the man who changed the style of the blues. As a songwriter and producer, the man
was a genius. If you wanted a hit song, you went to Willie Dixon. Played it like he said play it,
and sing it like he said sing it, and you damn near always had a hit. Willie Dixon taught bass players
how to rock 'n' roll. Listen to him on Chuck Berry's Chess recordings of "Rock and Roll Music,''and "Reelin' and Rockin''.

Back Scratcher He began performing when he was a child. The roads he traveled were long and sometimes very hard but most
of them have been shared with Sam Carr. In the 50's he and Sam were picked up by the Philip's label. They were
one of the first acts Sam Philips picked up for his newly formed company.

This was a reworking of his euphemistically suspect "Jelly Roll King" that he recorded at Sun. I strongly
suggest anyone who wants to hear this authentically to track down the original recording. I think the only
CD appearance of the original "Jelly Rolly King" is on a Sun blues singles collection (there are a few of them)
compilation. That CD also has another classic: Auburn Hare's "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby". So much really
great stuff? out there that is way overlooked. --- jcsuperstar714

You've Got To Walk That Lonesome Valley According to personal biography of his life John Hurt learn to love and appreciate music and guitar playing
from William H Carson, a man infatuated with his teacher at the St. James School, located in Avalon, Mississippi.
John Hurt stated, " I wasn't allowed to bother Mr. Carson's guitar. I would wait until he feel asleep at my house,
then I would slip his guitar into my room and try to play. There I learned to play the guitar at the age of nine years
old. After that, my mother bought me a second hand guitar at the price of $1.50! 1 can tell you there was no
beautiful sound than my own guitar music. I was playing for country dances at the same time working very
hard on a farm new Avalon Mississippi."

Mississippi John Was an Amazing Musician And Human Being.

CroatAndNettles 1 year ago 15
Wonderful stuff. You're right -- he? was one of the best. I got to see him play a couple of times
back in the mid-60s and it was a real treat. The sad part is the amazing records he made back
in the late 20s fell into obscurity, and he spent most of his life unknown to the music world
until a handful of collectors went and found him and brought him back to the stage and
recording studio for the last several years of his life. Almost everyone who fingerpicks guitar
owes him a considerable debt.

Yeah...I thought maybe for a second that there was another guitar there.
These guys are so good that they can get all kinds of sounds of the guitar
and let it ring out with little subtleties. After listening a few more times, I believe
it's just him playing. -Amazing

One String Sam performs My Babe of Little Walter
I Need A Hundred Dollars

One? String Sam (Watson) was a legend on Hastings Street in Detroit in the early 1950's.
Often he would play in front of a liquor store at Hastings and Palmer--until the police
would break up the crowd and move everyone off. Thanks for posting this song.

Gifted with a striking and almost immediately identifable vocal style
characterized by an amazing vibrato,  J.D. Short was also a very versatile
musician. He played piano, saxophone, guitar, harmonica, clarinet and
drums. Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, Short learned guitar and piano.
He was a frequent performer at house parties before he moved to St. Louis
in the '20s. Short played with the Neckbones, Henry Spaulding,
Honeyboy Edwards, Douglas Williams, and Big Joe Williams from the '30s
until the early '60s. He recorded for Vocalion, Delmark, Folkways, and Sonet.
Short was in the 1963 documentary The Blues, but died before it was released.

Monroe Vincent (Polka Dot Slim):Vocals & Harmonica

Monroe Vincent as born December 19, 1919 in Woodville, MS., and was influenced by the harmonica playing
of Sonny Boy Williamson I. Vincent made his debut in 1956 recording a single for Excello in Crowley, LA.
as Vince Monroe. In 1957 he recorded over two dozen sides for Zynn in Crowley, but at the time the label only
released two recordings. Some of these recordings were later issued by Flyright Records in England with Vincent
billed as "Mr. Calhoun". Vincent returned to recording in 1965 and the following year waxing two singles for
Instant & Apollo, respectively. Even after his recording career stalled, he remained a fixture on the New Orleans
performing scene up until about 1976. It is believed that Vincent passed away in Oakland, CA. in April of 1982.

Besides playing the guitar and singing in his baritone register vocals, he
accompanied himself with the pan pipes which he played from a rack
strapped around his neck. The pan pipes are a high-pitched reed instrument,
directly derived from like instruments found in Africa.

Henry Thomas, nicknamed Ragtime Texas, was born in 1874.
That date marks him as one of the eldest-born blues performers on record.

I Am The Howlin' Wolf

Uploaded on Mar 31, 2010

Great downhome blues by Smokey Wilson with William Clarke.
http://home.tiscali.nl/blackmagicrecords.nl/ This is a reissue,
originally released 1990, issued posthumously in the memory
of harmonica virtuoso William Clarke, who plays prominently
along with his band. Both frequently performed together at Wilson's
Pioneer Club and their close friendship is reflected in the musical interaction
of Wilson's Mississippi roots mixed with Clarke's hard-blowin' harp attack.
Wilson described his life best in "Tell Me What Do You See" with the words,
"I've been all around the world/And blues is all I know to play." Other greats
hop along for the ride, including keyboardist Fred Kaplan, and Mighty Flyers
alumni Junior Watson and Alex Schultz.
It's no accident that Wilson has some of Howlin' Wolf's vocal mannerisms on
the song named after the Wolf himself.
The story is that Wolf "willed" his voice to Wilson during one
of Wolf's shows. ~ Char Ham

Death Sting Me Blues Sara Martin with King Olivers Orchestra - Death Sting Me Blues -1928 - Sara Martin recorded
"Death Sting Me Blues" and three others with Clarence Williams that included King Oliver on cornet
in Chicago in 1928. This song is one of her better records from these sessions and shows Oliver
to be a true blues master.

While primarily a popular singer Martin could get low down on the blues and was billed as the
"famous moanin' mama" as well as "the colored Sophie Tucker" reflecting her dual roles as a Blues
and vaudeville performer. She toured the country until the early 1930s and recorded with Okeh
until 1928. In 1929 she appeared in the film "Hello, Bill" with tap dance icon Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
The following year she appeared in the first all African-American sound film "Darktown Revue".

Little is known about Rosie Mae Moore except for the fact that s
he was Charlie McCoy's girlfriend during the time of her recordings
that all took place in 1928. She recorded four sides for Victor in
Memphis in the early part of the year. Later in December she recorded
four more sides for Brunswick in New Orleans, backed by McCoy as well as
Walter Vincson and Bo Chatman of The Mississippi Shieks. On her Brunswick releases she was billed as Mary Butler.

Georgia White (March 9, 1903 -- c.1980) was an African American blues singer,
most prolific in the 1930s and 1940s. Little is known of her early life. By the late
1920s she was singing in clubs in Chicago, and she made her first recording,
"When You're Smiling, the Whole World Smiles With You," with Jimmie Noone's
orchestra in 1930. She returned to the studio in 1935, and over the next six years r
ecorded over 100 tracks for Decca Records, usually accompanied by the
pianist Richard M. Jones and also, in the late 1930s, by guitarist Lonnie Johnson.
Her output exceeds that of her rivals Lil Johnson and Merline Johnson, and even
Memphis Minnie, during those years.

I see that this video is banned in some countries ! Wow....Lucille Bogan's fantastic boogie woogie piano player with a
lead vocal..Walter Roland was an American blues, boogie-woogie and jazz pianist, guitarist and singer, noted for his
association with Lucille Bogan, Josh White and Sonny Scott.

Music journalist, Gérard Herzhaft, stated that Roland was "a great piano player... as comfortable in boogie-woogies
as in slow blues." "Roland - with his manner of playing and his singing - was direct and rural," Roland was born in Ralph,
Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, on either December 20, 1902 (according to his Social Security documentation) or 12/4/03
(according to his death certificate). He started playing on the Birmingham blues circuit in the 1920s. A competent and
versatile pianist, his range covered slow blues to upbeat and jaunty boogie-woogie numbers. He was also skilled as a
guitar player, and possessed a forceful singing voice. Between 1933 and 1935, Roland traveled to New York on three
separate occasions, recording around fifty songs under his own name for Banner Records (ARC). In 1933, Roland recorded
"Red Cross Store Blues" (variously "Red Cross Blues"), his cynical viewpoint on welfare benefits.[4][5] Amongst his
other better known efforts are "No Good Biddie," "Jookit Jookit," "Piano Stomp," "Whatcha Gonna Do," and
"Early This Morning."

In addition to his solo output, Roland also recorded as an accompanist for other musicians. For example, the guitarist and
singer Sonny Scott recorded fourteen tracks for Vocalion in 1933, all of them backed by Roland.[7] The tracks included two
instrumentals ("Guitar Stomp" and "Railroad Stomp"), billed on record as the Jolly Two, where Roland matched Scott's
guitar work.

Lucille Bogan was usually accompanied by Roland on piano, although he sometimes played an acoustic guitar backing.
She was also in New York in 1933, and, apparently to conceal her identity, began recording as Bessie Jackson for
Banner Records. She recorded over 100 songs between 1933 and 1935, including some of her biggest commercial successes
such as "Seaboard Blues", "Troubled Mind", and "Superstitious Blues".

During this same period Roland also accompanied Josh White on several tracks.[2]

Bogan's final recordings with Roland and White included two takes of "Shave 'Em Dry", recorded in New York on
Tuesday March 5, 1935. The unexpurgated alternate take is notorious for its explicit sexual references, a unique record
of the lyrics sung in after-hours adult clubs.[9][10]

Hound Dog Taylor and the House Rockers -
15 minute LIVE Ann Arbor 1973 Video
Hound Dog Taylor was born Theodore Roosevelt Taylor, named after the US President. He was born with six fingers on each hand. Growing up in the Mississippi Delta, his childhood was not an easy one.
When he was only 9 years old, his step father supposedly packed up all of his things in a brown paper bag, stood in the doorway with a shotgun, and told Hound Dog to "cut out". That's the way the story
goes anyway. From info I've gathered from people who knew him, this story may or may not be true. But he did go to live with his older sister around that time in his life.

The first instrument Taylor learned to play was not the guitar, but piano, which he learned as a kid. He first picked up the guitar while in his teens but didn't start to seriously play until he was around 21.

At that time he started playing all over the Delta, not only playing guitar, but piano, too. He also appeared a few times on the legendary King Biscuit Flour radio show of KFFA in West Helena, Arkansas,
with Sonny Boy Williamson. In 1942, Taylor, always the ladies man, was chased out of Mississippi one day by the Klan after having an affair with a white woman. He spent the first day hiding in drainage
ditches and then the next day he headed for Chicago. He never went back. Although he continued to play his guitar semi-professionally at night, he spent the first 15 years in Chicago working several different
non music jobs. In 1957 he was building TV cabinets when he decided to become a full-time bluesman. At this time he also changed his playing style. Where he once played standard and E tunings, he now was
playing an increasingly more bottleneck style. This change came about by his being heavy influenced by the then emerging Elmore James.

Early on he garnered a huge local following with his wild live shows, most of the time he would be sitting on a folding chair, stomping both feet, throwing his head back in a frency, drinking Canadian Club

and puffing on his cigarettes, urging the crowd to get up and dance, as he blared away on his guitar. Taylor became one of Chicago's most loved bluesmen and a local favorite on the South and West sides of town.
It was during this time that he picked up the name "Hound Dog". He was in a club one night chasing a couple of women around when a friend called him a hound dog because he was always on the hunt for woman.
The name stuck. It was also around this time when one night, a drunken Hound would, with a straight razor, cut off the small extra finger on his right hand.

Hound Dog's band, the HouseRockers, would come about slowly. In 1959 while playing in a West Side tavern, a guitarist named Brewer Phillips (also born in Mississippi) gigged with the Dog for the first time.

The two became quick friends and Phillips would become the HouseRockers second guitarist.

Hound Dog was at the height of his success and was now starting to get better gigs, and his music continued to sell even more. But sometimes things just don't go the route planned and it seemed from out of nowhere

trouble was brewing. Although Hound Dog and Phillips were closest of friends, they had gotten into numerous fights throughout the years. One day in May '75 while Phillips was visiting Hound Dog along with
Son Seals at the Hound's apartment, a drunken fight broke out between Phillips and Hound Dog. It seemed Phillips said something insulting about Hound Dog's wife Fredda, so Hound Dog left the room, and then
returned with a .22 rifle. Aiming for the couch, he hit Phillips twice, once in the forearm and once in the leg. Seals then took the gun away from Hound Dog. Luckily, Phillips would recover and be okay, but
Hound Dog would not. Phillips pressed charges and Hound Dog was supposed to be tried for attempted murder. But the Dog, a heavy smoker, was sick, very sick. He was dying of lung cancer.
Instead of facing a trial he landed in the hospital. On his deathbed, his last wish was granted when Phillips visited him in the hospital and forgave him for the shooting.
Hound Dog Taylor passed away the very next day, 12/17/ 1975.

JUMP BLUES
This is the link to JUMP BLUES, (on the JUMP BLUES page) an almost unknown topic to most of the musically inclined audience. A lot of Big Band influence was taken into its orchestral format.
This became VERY UNPOPULAR in the 1960's when the electric guitar became King. I used to think that the electric guitar became unpopular in the Modern Jazz era because of technical difficulty, etc.
Not true! The electric guitar was not popular with that set because all of the leading Jazz musicians were technically driven.

40 Days And 40 Nights

Buddy Guy is the last living bridge (I know of, anyway) between the delta blues brought up north by Muddy
and those legends, and the more modern blues, British or whatever. I've had the honor of seeing him several
times (mostly in the sixties), including one unrepeatable night when Clapton, on the first Cream tour, came to
sit in with Buddy's band, which included Junior Wells. New Orleans House, Berkeley. Holy moley.
